The idea behind this conversation is to give the customer, or end user, the ability to "shop' for the best solutions to their equipment needs and not be "held hostage" by their current provider because of proprietary communication language.

The discussion usually includes words such as BACNet, LonWorks, and ModBus, and other language protocols being used in the equipment and controls industry. Although this discussion has been around for several years, the successful implementation of systems integration has been challenging.
