Mount Vernon City Schools' Twin Oak Elementary Earns EPA's ENERGY STAR Award

(Mt. Vernon, Ohio) January 2010 - Mount Vernon City Schools' Twin Oak Elementary has earned the honor of becoming an ENERGY STAR labeled building from the Environmental Protection Agency. Only forty-seven K-12 buildings in Ohio have received the certification. Along with the Middle School, Twin Oak Elementary has also recently earned the distinction of the ENERGY STAR label.
Twin Oak Elementary was a newly constructed facility in 2005. As part of the new construction, CCG Automation, Inc. installed an Automated Logic's WebCTRL building automation system to control all major pieces of HVAC equipment as well as monitoring humidity and CO2 levels. This web based system has the ability to do scheduling, zoning, defining setpoints, and analyzing trends in energy consumption.
CCG's innovative approach to sequencing and analyzing trends has been instrumental in this school becoming ENERGY STAR labeled. These concepts have enabled the school to keep utility cost low while ensuring a comfortable, quality indoor environment for students and staff.
School buildings that have earned the ENERGY STAR Award use nearly 40 percent less energy than average buildings and emit 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, offering a significantly smaller carbon footprint. Buildings excel due to good energy management practices such as routine energy efficiency benchmarking.
ENERGY STAR was introduced by the EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. To qualify for the ENERGY STAR, a building must score in the top 25 percent based on EPA's National Energy Performance Rating System and requires a review of the facility by a professional engineer. Osborn Engineering, located in Cleveland Ohio, conducted the review for Twin Oak Elementary. Only 8,784 buildings nationwide have earned the ENERGY STAR Award, and just 2,328 of these are school buildings. Other buildings include supermarkets, office, churches, hotels, banks, hospitals, courthouses, warehouses, dormitories and big-box retail buildings.
