UH Ahuja Medical Center Recognized for Energy Savings
Posted on 6/18/2024
We are excited to announce that CCG Automation, Inc. has received the Innovative Energy Project of the Year Mid-West US Award and the Runner-up for the 2024 International Award: Energy Project of the Year: US from the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) for the UH Ahuja Medical Center project!
The UH Ahuja Medical Center illustrates that newer facilities provide a great opportunity for energy reduction. Occupied in 2011, this facility won numerous design and sustainability awards. Unfortunately, during occupancy, it was saturated with comfort complaints and the resulting high energy consumption.
Planning for a 296,400 ft2 addition, and not interested in repeating the energy performance of the original facility, they partnered with CCG Automation to address the comfort and energy issues. A two-phase approach was developed. Phase 1 was to replace the existing BAS in the Central Plant with an Automated Logic WebCTRL system under a Guaranteed Energy Contract, and Phase 2 was to expand that system into the new addition.
UH/Sodexo executed the contracts with CCG Automation, and surprising to all parties, in the 12-month period following the Central Plant BAS upgrade the savings exceeded $1,000,000. The Energy Utilization Index (EUI), a metric that measures the energy consumption of a building, dropped 28.4% after the two phases were completed. Considering that the initial Siemens Apogee BAS remains in the original 417,000 ft2 facility, and the new ALC WebCTRL system controls only 41% of the total ft2, the results are unparalleled!
In addition to the comfort improvements and energy reduction, UH is also benefitting from the improved productivity a more comfortable building provides, longer equipment life, reduced maintenance costs, and improved system compliance.
The mechanical and electrical systems designed in today’s buildings can be very complex. A creative approach to controlling this technology can have amazing results.
CCG is very proud of the partnership we have developed with the UH/Sodexo team. The standards being developed and implemented in their facilities, with the assistance of their design consultants, are generating significant energy savings while improving the indoor environment. The recognition from the Association of Energy Engineers, an organization with over 32,000 certified professionals in 125 countries, for the UH Ahuja Medical Center project validates the efforts of the team. We would like to thank AEE for this recognition.
