West Holmes Middle School Boiler Upgrades Exceed the Mark
Posted on 12/19/2008
In October of 2007, West Holmes Middle school implemented an energy-savings project with CCG. When the project first started, the annual projected savings were $37,341. One year after the project was completed the actual project savings totaled $44,747, exceeding the original estimate by $7,406. With energy consumption at 51,200 btu/sq. ft./year, the building earns an ENERGY STAR® Rating of 83 by EPA guidelines.
The project was initiated after West Holmes Local Schools experienced problems with the old boilers in its middle school facility. The district decided to implement a House Bill 264 Energy Conservation Program, which allowed them to upgrade the old boilers with high-efficient condensing boilers, as well as the required controls for proper management of the new system. By implementing the House Bill 264 Program, the district was able to fund the energy project using the cost savings from the improvements. No additional taxpayer funds were needed.
West Holmes Middle School now qualifies to apply for the EPA’s ENERGY STAR Award. Any building with a rating over 75 can apply for this prestigious award. School buildings that have earned the award in the past use nearly 40 percent less energy than average building. They also emit 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, offering a significantly smaller carbon footprint. These facilities excel due to good energy management practices, such as routine energy efficiency benchmarking.
West Holmes High School also has qualified for an ENERGY STAR Award after completing a 2003 energy project – also partnered with CCG – along with an ongoing dedication to efficient building operations.
