West Holmes High School Awarded EPA's ENERGY STAR
Posted on 6/19/2009
West Holmes High School has earned the prestigious honor of becoming an ENERGY STAR® labeled building from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Only 27 school buildings in Ohio have received this certification. In addition, West Holmes High School is the first school building in Holmes County to earn this recognition.
In 2003 West Holmes Local Schools completed an Energy Conservation Program under the guidelines of the Ohio School Facilities Commissions, House Bill 264 with CCG, Inc. for building improvements at the High School. The combination of project improvements and continued commitment to conserve energy has made it possible for West Holmes High School to qualify for the ENERGY STAR Award.
School buildings that have earned the ENERGY STAR Award use nearly 40 percent less energy than average buildings and emit 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, offering a significantly smaller carbon footprint. Buildings excel due to good energy management practices such as routine energy efficiency benchmarking.
ENERGY STAR was introduced by the EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. To qualify for the ENERGY STAR, a building must score in the top 25 percent based on EPA's National Energy Performance Rating System. Only 6,953 buildings nationwide have earned the ENERGY STAR Award, and just 1,616 of these are school buildings. Other buildings include supermarkets, office, hotels, banks, hospitals, courthouses, warehouses, dormitories and big-box retail buildings.
