CCG Wins Energy Project of the Year
Posted on 1/24/2013
CCG, Inc. was awarded the 2012 Energy Project of the Year by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) for an energy conservation project completed at the Twinsburg High School and Sports Complex. Through its International Awards Program, AEE, a nonprofit professional association of over 16,000 members, recognizes the important work being done in energy by individuals, organizations, agencies, and corporations. AEE confers prestigious awards each year to individuals and organizations that have achieved national and international prominence in promoting the practices and principles of energy engineering and energy management.
The annual award winners were announced at the 35th World Energy Engineering Congress in Atlanta, Georgia on October 30, 2012. A local presentation was held on January 24, 2013 with the AEE honoring representatives from CCG and Twinsburg City Schools at a luncheon held at the Crown Centre Auditorium in Independence, Ohio.
The Twinsburg High School and Sports Complex project goes above and beyond typical energy conservation projects. The effort and attention that was dedicated to this project produced outstanding results; data from only six months of performance tracking showed that energy use was reduced by 46.3%. These impressive results gained national attention for the project, by both the EPA’s Battle of the Buildings competition and Contracting Magazine’s Design/Build Awards. Since that time, and only 12 months into performance review, the building has increased efficiency to 53.2% reduction in energy consumption, and is on track to save the school district over $402,000 annually in energy bills alone.
The 367,295-sq. ft. building was only 10 years old, but it was not operating efficiently. In fact, the building was rated a 1 on EPA’s Portfolio Manager rating system of 1-100, with 100 being the most efficient. Today, the EPA’s rating of this building is an impressive 91 that has earned it the coveted Energy Star Certified Building designation.
Upgrades included:
- Three high-efficiency 3-million BTU boilers replaced three 8-million BTU boilers
- Variable-primary pumping system freed floor space and reduced energy demand
- Indoor and outdoor lighting upgrades
- Automated Logic WebCTRL® system that continuously monitors the building and maintains an ideal indoor environment
Along with the energy and cost savings for the building, the positive environmental impact of this project extends far beyond this community. Projected energy reductions by Twinsburg City Schools will prevent a significant amount of pollutants from being emitted into the atmosphere each year.
