Portage Lakes Career Center Completes Building Improvements
Posted on 9/30/2013
Portage Lakes Career Center (PLCC) recently completed an energy conservation project with CCG in its 128,724 square foot building, under the guidelines of Ohio School Facilities Commissions House Bill 264. The House Bill 264 legislation allows K-12 schools to borrow money to make improvements towards energy efficiency for buildings and use the cost savings to pay back the loan.
When CCG and PLCC initially reviewed the needs of the project, they realized there were more upgrades required then the project allowed under the House Bill 264 legislation. So, to both maximize the energy conservation project as well as meet the needs of the career center, a new construction controls project was simultaneously completed at the same time.
Under the House Bill 264 project the career center implemented energy saving strategies that helped solve many of the major issues in the main building, the Health Center, and the Horticulture addition. The mechanical upgrades included upgrading the existing inefficient boilers to new high efficiency condensing boilers. Along with this upgrade the domestic hot water heater was replaced and the pumping system was upgraded with new pumps, motors, and VFD’s. This new boiler plant was integrated into the existing Automated Logic building automation system to improve comfort and control in the building. The career center also implemented campus-wide lighting upgrades.
The program will realize annual savings of $56,095 in electric costs and $9,315 in gas costs. Annual operational savings are $6,000. The total savings for the project, over the 15-year term, are estimated at $1,106,189. The cost of the implementation was $1,100,495
